Well I started playing at about 4.5 so 2.5 is maybe a little young but I think I've seen 2-3 year olds play before. I had to use a folding chair for balance when I started (looked kind of funny but worked well). Make sure he can stay warm and make sure his skates are tight but obviously not too tight. He still has a lot of hockey in front of him so mostly just focus on basic skating with him.

I signed my son up for his first hockey season and he's five. Last year he was signed up for a learn to skate program and excelled (graduated 4 pre-school levels by the end of the classes). My 3 year old daughter was also signed up for this program and did learn some things, but did not do as well as her 4 year old brother (only graduated through 2 pre-school levels).

If you can't find skates that fit, then stuff a sock in the toe. But tie-up skates. The plastic skates with the plastic release valve, the design is such that every time they fall, this catch will release and their skates will come off and all they basically do in the first round of classes is learn to fall and get back up again. There was one kid who's parents wouldn't buy better skates, so they had to duct tape the skates on to keep the class moving.

My son is too young to actually play sport (he's 13 months) but we take him along to games and make up stories about what's going on on the field, I think he gets a lot of understanding from it because he'll point to various thinks and gurgle and babble baby words when he sees something he knows.
