Can I file for unemployment 3 days before I am laid off?

sototallymonica asked:

I have been at my job for a year and have put in an insane amount of hours but my job is ending this Wednesday. Am I able to file on Monday or do I have to wait until the last day of my job?

You file for unemployment after they officially lay you off.

You can’t file ahead of time in anticipation.

  2. No. Check their website as to the waiting period.

  3. You will have to wait until you are officially unemployed, have proof that you are via pink slip or facsimile. Then you may apply.

  4. No you have to wait until it has happened, the good news is since the company is laying you off on Wed that becomes your waiting week so you only lose a couple of days pay instead of a whole week very nice of the company to do.

  5. I got two weeks notice when I was laid off and I applied for unemployment the day I found out. They sent me everything I need to finish filing my claim and told me how much I would be getting every week. I did make money the last two weeks of employment, which I recorded on the paperwork, so my benefits will be adjusted accordingly. But technically I think you are supposed to wait.

Also, they sent paperwork to my employer asking to verify that I had been laid off… so if your employer knows they’re letting you go, it shouldn’t be a huge issue. PLUS, I read on the EDD web site that you should file early if it’s anywhere near Thanksgiving (don’t ask me why).
