Do you have any tips for winning singles matches in tennis?

Brianna asked:

I am not doing so well in my singles tennis team at the moment.
I have just started this year and I always seem to lose,
I think I have a good serve,volley and forehand .. when I get it right :P.
Not very good at backhand though, I have to keep practicing that.

All answers appreciated :)

  1. Always be on the move, even when the ball is on the other side of the net, your feet should be constantly moving. A good goal for you is to stay on the move and be in the absoulute best position to hit the ball when it comes to you, so you’re ready. Play with confidence and use topspin. Always try and hit the ball where you’re oppenet isn’t. Move it side to side, short then long. Its all about who can outlast who.

  2. Improve weaknesses through practice. In matches, try to reduce errors and let your opponent make the errors. Look for weaknesses in the opponent and play to those weaknesses.. Hit deep to their backhand side for instance and come to the net. Hit drop shots followed by lobs if you are able. Really concentrate on watching the ball. Try to see how it is spinning as it comes toward you.

  3. when you do volley hit it in about 30 degrees of an angle so it can go to the opposite side of your opponent or you could hit it so hard that it bounces and goes up soo high that he/she is not going to have a chance to hit it back to you!!!
keep practicing the back hands…you’ll get better @ them!!

  4. you gotta keep playing and work on it… mix up your game.. and know when to use your reliable shots that u mentioned…

and become more patient on the court…

  5. I got one word for you-

    PRACTICE!

Especially on your backhand, if your opponents know that you backhand isn’t that strong than you would definitely suffer a one-side match. In singles, you need to find your opponents weak point and attack it. It is easy to find it early when you’re warming up with your opponent. Hit a couple of slices and see how well she/he could adjust to the ball. When she is volley check wither it is good or not, if not then during the game bring him/her up to the net.

Most important is to be consistent, some player basically waiting until their opponent mess up first.

Go to the public tennis courts or play against everyone of you teammates-

Why? Because it would make you get used to different type of tennis styles and helps your ability to adjust playing against different styles. (the reason I also suggested public courts is because you could just ask one of them if you want a match, don’t be shy)

    Maybe it is your stamina-
You might be tired when the match continues and you basically shut down. If this is the reason, I suggest you run 2 miles everyday, 1 mile if you think that is too much. (My coach make each run 2 miles and do sprints every practice.)

    Ask the coach-
He/She is you’re coach so he/she might know what is going on.

  6. i think that ebveryone mnst be fit

  7. It’s all mental. If you make a mental picture of where you will send the ball and focus hard on that image, most likely you will hit the ball in that vicinity. How accurately depends on your skill, but often, as the other player is the sole object of our concentration we end up hitting straight to our opponent. You should generally avoid this unless you hit pretty deep. Try hitting it softly side to side and make them move, even if slowly.
It might just be enough to throw them off. With enough practice you could actually force your opponent to run back and forth returning your shots (very fun XD)

If you’re willing, you should find a professional coach that you like. Just find one you are comfortable learning from and that you can have fun with.
Its all mental, so just relax and believe in yourself. Confidence is important here.

  8. i think in tennis more than physically you have to be mentally tough. Because sometimes you feel your’e going to lose and in those situations you have to be very composed. Tennis is unpredictable. You may be losing but in the last moment anything can happen. Just keep this thought in your mind and play point by point. Be physically fit also. Tennis has a lot of running and stretching and pay attention to that. And attempt to each and every ball. When you feel you can’t receive the ball just make up your mind and put extra effort to hit the ball..may be your opponent will not be able to receive it..and watch a lot of tennis on tv..this will help you to improve on your strategies..good luck

  9. Each match, each opponent is different. You might have to use one particular shot more so then any other to wind up on winning end. All in all though, try as best as you can to play your game, not theirs, and be patient during each and every point. Do not rush a shot or try to overpower your opponent all the time, especially if you are making errors. Power si fine, but if you cant keep the ball in play, stay alive during the point, then whats the “point”? Certain times finesse prevails, just ask Federer. Also try and keep your opponent consistently on the run when possible. Not everyone is conditioned well, and can tire easily. Another factor that can help, is try and stay calm and not get too frustrated when shots arent going in, double faults and so forth. Just keep fighting through the difficult points/games and do what you do best.
