Does anyone know the longevity of flash drives?

I am tired of losing data on CD′s or having computers that won’t read certain disks, and as i move around a lot the possibility of disks getting damaged is even greater. Are flash drives affected by travelling through airports and scanners and the like? It seems the only real way to store information is to print everything as despite all the talk and hype there is no secure electronic storage for the home user.
