e39 BMW part?

Ryan asked:

The car in question is a 2000 BMW M5, and the part is located on the side of the differential. In the last picture, the front of the part is on the left of the diff.
Can anyone provide me with a link to buy this part?
Or if you could even tell me exactly what it is…?!
Thanks

Mr. Dirt,
I′m not entirely sure what you′re talking about. This car was purchased from an insurance auction from my uncle, who then sold it to me for a project. I happen to know that the previous owner did not take very good care of it. Any vehicle that is mistreated stands greater odds of breaking, even the Ultimate Driving Machine.
Well, all the lights on my dash are currently on (flood damage). I believe this part may be responsible for the knocking every time I shift.
Thanks again for the answers,
Richie- Yes it is a little dirty! The seal on the differential was leaking.
Andrew- That does look like the correct part, put on my car, it is connected to the differential… although they do look very much alike.

  1. This question has to be a hoax, I mean Mr BMW the certified BMW mechanic says they never break down.
Could it be that he is wrong?
    The part is a thingamajig.

  2. definately this part never breaks, looks like someone had tried some modification.
Go to a salvage yard or second hand dealer and find one.
Another alternative is to order through the dealers.
Your performance would have dropped due to leak/modification.
This controls the flow and pressure,is there any warning light showing up?Or do u find that the car is not giving the push as it used to.?
U will have a smoother and better drive after replacing it.

  3. From your pictures i think it looks like a vibration dampner best try the dealer for this part. Looks like this fella needs a good wash unger there.
