Gold has had great value and has been sought for thousands of years. Nobody can be sure who first placed value on it.
Many claim the first gold coin was “minted” in what is now Turkey about 600 B.C. There were discovered Egyptian gold pieces dated by the markings from 1400 B.C.
Here is a link to a site describing ancient gold discoveries and uses
Gold is in the metal catagory.
It’s in both families of precious metals and chemical elements/transition metals.
Gold has been used for bloody AGES, and its impossible to pinpoint who discovered it because it’s been used by the ancient Egyptians and the Mayans.
Do you really need to know who discovered its existence?
Gold is an “element”, and although it can be alloyed (or mixed) with other things, it’s found also in its pure state in nature, where it shines and sparkles in rock deposits, or sometimes at the bottom of streams. It does not oxidize (which is what makes iron rusty) and so retains it brightness and color, and is very soft and workable compared to other metals, and feels heavier than other metal pieces of the same size. That’s why it is so popular and has been used since at least the Egyptian era some 4000 years ago — people liked to make it into shapes and coins that could be worn or stamped with a face or writing. Because it is quite rare, it became cherished and a symbol of wealth. Eventually adopted to be THE standard of value throughout the world, it remains guarded in treasuries of many nations and wealthy people, both in civilized and primitive cultures.
As far as its actual “discoverers”, it’s pretty certain that the first shiny bit of gold graced the belt or maybe fingers or noses or ears of men and women in what we call pre-history, since it was first seen shining at the bottom of a stream, or glinting from a rock.
