How do you buy stocks? Does it charge to buy stocks?
You can buy stocks through a stock broker, but this is expensive. You can also buy stocks online at sites such as Ameritrade or etrade.
Answering your last question, yes, you pay what the stock costs plus a small commission or fee. The amount of the commission or fee varies widely, so you should buy the stock through somewhere that does not charge more than you are willing to pay.
The best and the cheapest way to buy stocks is through online sites like E-Trade, Scot-Trade, Ameritrade, etc. They charge a small fee ranging from $5-$10 for each transaction (buy or sell) that you make.
I have an account with scot-trade and they charge only $7 per each online transaction. Their website is very convenient to use as well. In order to open an account with them, you just have to search for their office and then go there and make a deposit of minimum $500. Then you are all set to go.
To keep a track of stock prices and trends I would recommend Yahoo Finance which you could access through the following website:
The above two are right. I’d stay away from AIG, though…
I use Sharebuilder.com It is only $4 to buy stocks and I don’t have to keep a minimum invested. You can buy whatever stocks you want through them, but they are primarily set up for the invester interested in making routine investments over time (dollar cost averaging) I’m not sure they would work out well if you are trying to become a day trader. AIG is a big risk…a loan from the government (us) does not prevent them from going bankrupt.
