How do I find out what bonds an atom can form? (covalent, ionic, etc.)?

For example: What bonds can hydrogen atoms form? What bonds can carbon form? How do I find this information out? Thank you.

  1. ionic can be form between metal and non metal (generally) and covalent is between non metal atom

    in detail is about rate of electronegativity each atom if the electronegativity difference between atoms greater than 3,7 (not really sure) that must form a ionic bond
