How far Hard Drives (Hard Disks) can withstand Dust and Dirt ?

Gabriel asked:

I am always curious whether Dust and Dirt that accumulates on Hard Dirves have any effects on the devices..

Can anybody explain please the effects of having too much Dust and Dirt on Hard Drives ?

If there are too much Dust and Dirt, do they shorten the life of Hard Disk or even cause malfunction ?

Thanks a lot for COMPLETE and THOROUGH ANSWERS.

Reference to any websites is very much appreciated.

  1. Dirt and dust on the outside of the drives can cause them to overheat and burn out. That would be the only thing that I can think of.

  2. Actually hard drives are sealed so dust should not get in. The dust inside the computer may do more harm to the processor and fan than the HDD

  3. “Not really”. Hard drives are sealed systems. Though dirt and dust may affect the connectors, the HD itself would not be affected.

However, the computer itself is another matter. Dust will accumulate on the heatsinks of the CPU, GPU, power supplies, and so on, causing a potential short and/or fire hazard.

But as the way you asked it, “no”.

  4. most people i run in to with computer problems refer to the computer and case as the hard drive so thats what i thinks you are asking about. So with that in mind yes dust gets into the computer because the fans act like a vacuum and sucks dust in when running that stick to the cpu heat shrink and fan blades.
Once a year i open mine up and with a low pressure air “blow” the dust out to keep it running cool
