How late in the season can sod be laid?

Rich asked:

I am having a new home built in the Chicago area, and it is the first of November. Is it too late in the year to lay sod? If so, what should I do?

  1. I think after the first freeze, it is too late. You should probably wait until spring. Sod is expensive, I would hate to see you waste your money. We have new construction, and our sod went in the fall, not the winter. Also, if they are still building the house now, those construction people will mess up your sod and your entire yard. It’s not like they’re careful. Good luck with your home. Chicago is a beautiful city.

  2. We laid sod anytime the ground was not frozen or would freeze within the next few weeks. If you did it this weekend or next, didn’t have a Canandian Blast coming down, and stayed off it all winter (as far as children playing, etc) and were able to keep the soil moist, you could do it.

  3. You can lay sod until the snow begins to fly…..(that’s a quote from a sod professional) The sod farm you are getting your sod from will let you know if it’s too late in your area to lay it. More than likely tho….you can still lay it..the ground probably isn’t frozen in Chicago yet, is it?
