How long after a bird has laid eggs will she try to mate again?

Remy M asked:

I purchased a Finch from a bird store and was told that she actually had a clutch of eggs at the breeder’s house when she was brought in to be sold ( I bought her the day she came in…she’s so pretty =)

Anyway, just wondering if she will produce more eggs for me sometime soon.
Thanks for the replies =)

But i think my question was misunderstood. She is now in an cage with a male. I was wondering sense was was taken away from her other eggs will she take along to breed again?

  1. Well, if she doesn’t have a male, than the eggs that she will lay later will be entirely infertile. So, if she does lay eggs, just leave them in the cage for about 3 weeks. Then you can remove them and throw them out. If you just keep taking the eggs out and throwing them out like, right after they were laid, then she will continue to lay more and more until she dies of exhaustion.

Also, keep in mind that Finches are social birds. They will need a companion, like another finch, or, if you have enough time, you could be its companion.

also take into consideration that if she continually lays eggs she can subject herself to egg binding (that is where the egg becomes stuck inside her and she is unable to lay them) which go to your local pet store and buy her some artificial eggs they sell them for about 19 cents each a normal healthy bird shouldn’t have more than 2 clutches per year any more than that and you will start to run risks of her health

  3. Once she is comfortable with her new surroundings and her new mate, and the conditions are right (temp, humidity, getting enough good quality food, etc) she will begin to lay again. You don’t want her laying too soon or really too often at all. Chronic egg laying can end up being deadly in a bird. (uses up nutrients vital to the birds health, can cause deficiencies and can lead to egg binding)
