How may one tell how a stocks total gain is divided into capital and dividends?

I see stocks and mutual funds advertising yields and it is not clear always how these are gained.

  1. You could figure it out yourself. Morningstar and Yahoo! Finance give the dividend yield for every stock adn fund. Just subtract the dividend yield from the total yield.
