How much of a difference is there between a 7200 RPM and 5400 RPM hard drives?

jaan32001 asked:

I recently purchased a Dell XPS notebook that came with a 200 GB hard drive at 7200 RPM. After i bought it though i saw a 320 GB XPS notebook at 5400 RPM for only 50 dollars more. So what is the difference between the 5400 and 7200 RPM speeds.

  1. 5400 runs slower so it wont heat up that must and 7200rpm run faster and it can read info faster but it can really boil an cup of water.

  2. To be honest, unless your doing anything that needs super fast acess to and from the hard drive(like say, workin with Photoshop, large publishing files or gaming), then there’s little real performance difference, well at least any that you’d notice. And yes, 7200RPM drives are a bit dodgy, especially in laptops, if they’re used for extended periods of time, as they heat up, the whole machine will start to get hot, the fans will start spinning up, and the overall lifespan and reliability of your laptop will most probably be hindered if you keep doing that for a considerable chunk of it’s life. So, if it’s capacity vs speed, choose capacity, and a lower spin speed, it’ll run cooler and last longer, and as with any laptop, upgrading hard drives, while easy for a seasoned person able to swap out components and start opening things, is a bit of a hasstle to say the least, so your laptop will thank you for it in the end. 3. If running large graphic compiled programs or disk intensive programs you will see a slowdown in the display of data as well as a slight difference in startup and shutdown time. It can be improved by keeping it cleaned up and defragged on a regular basis. Have you considered running it in addition to the internal unit with a usb enclosure?

  4. 1,800 RPM is the difference.
