How to polish a yellow gold ring?

maldmb03 asked:

My husband is very hard on his solid gold wedding band, he forgets to take it off when doing projects like tearing down dry wall or paintballing. It’s pretty scratched up already and we′ve only been married for 3 months. Is there a good way to polish it up or is there a good product that will do the trick without taking it to the jewelers?

  1. with isopropyl alcohol. much of it

  2. I think the jewelers is the only one who can get the scratches out, but why bother if he continues to wear it and scratch it up?

You can try using a toothbrush and toothpaste on it - don’t laugh, it doesn’t scratch your teeth up, does it, and polishes them and makes them shiny - I use this on my wedding set, and it keeps my gold and diamonds sparkling.

Also, I read in a magazine to use toothpaste to polish high-end bathroom faucets and fixtures without scratching, it is very safe to use - obviously.

  3. toothpaste and a toothbrush. works every time.

  4. Ok, to get rid of the scratches the ring MUST be polished by a jeweller’s buffing machine, that’s the only way that you can illuminate the scratching. The best way to clean and shine your jewellery is by dipping it in boiled ammonia and water for about 20 mins or so, but you’d actually need a special machine for that called the ultrasonic. So I do strongly recommend you taking it to the jeweller to attain the best results. Some home used products like tooth pastes and dishwashing liquids can sometimes (depending on the carat of the item) have a negative reaction on the piece and may turn it into a different colour.
