Kat asked:
My fantail to my surprise have laid eggs three times in the past three months but with no luck. I have four fish in a 30gal tank 3 fantail and one bottom feeder. I have tried to take the two out but as soon as I did they stopped. If I leave them the others as well as the two eat the eggs. Please help any suggestions.
Thanks. Fish mom

Make a screen with pantyhose and place it as a divider inside the tank
When the fish stop laying eggs move them to the other side of the tank and slide in the divider.
dont know to much about fish but try one of those breeder tanks. they float in top of tank and u can put just the eggs in. go to ur local pet shop and see what they say
Fish will eat mostly anything that is in the tank. After the eggs are laid you need to take them out very carefully and place them into another tank. You must feed them special food and lots of it and the water conditions have to be just right. I would google it more or even do a yahoo search on fan tail breeding
iv never breed egg layers but i have been told an effective method is to suck the eggs out of the tank with a turkey baster and move them to a seperate tank to hatch out. just make sure the water perameters are nerarly identical and that the second tank is cycled properly.
hope this helps good luck
You can’t breed them, they will eat all the eggs and fry in those tank conditions.
You have however made a couple of mistakes in your set up. One is 3 fantails will outgrow a 30 gallon tank. But that’s the least of your worries, if you keep up with high volume and frequent water changes those 3 should be able to survive a little cramped. The worst thing is the bottom feeder, I assume is a pleco. Pleco have no place in with goldfish. They are omnivours that are also noctournal. What this means is they like meat and they hunt at night. Goldfish sleep at night. One morning you will wake up to find the bottom feeder has been feeding off the slime coat of your helpless sleeping goldfish. Goldfish only belong in a tank with other goldfish and no other fish including the bottom feeder. Did you know that fish produces as much or more waste than it cleans up? If fish eat they also poop, so a ‘cleaning’ fish offers no clean up what so ever, they only add to the waste in the tank. Get rid of it.
You can find an article on why you shouldn’t have a pleco in a goldfish tank at
Breeding goldfish is for professionals mainly. Make sure you syphon out all the left over eggs, and change 75% of the water after they spawn or the tank will foul quickly.
