I worked for a short time and was laid off. Should this go on my resume ?

lallybelle asked:

I was there for a month, the lay off was valid (I saw the business drop off sharply after a new policy was put into effect), and they probably shouldn′t have hired anyone in the first place. That said, should it go on my resume or job applications; or should I just leave it off ? And should I mention it in my interviews ? My guess is no, but I could use some input.

  1. I wouldn’t mention it on your resume…it just might make you look bad for your prospective jobs.

  2. If this was recent, I’d mention it. Unfortunately, this happens. You had control over whether or not you were hired ( you were good enough for them to want to hire you.) but you had no control over why you left. It is nothing to want to hide.

  3. It depends if you learned anything valuable that you could apply to a new job. If you spent a majority of your month of a new software that the interviewing company uses, put it on your resume or bring it up on an interview. If you have no knowledge you gained from your month there that could be transferred to a new place, then leave it off. It is irrelevant ~ unless they ask why you were in between jobs for that period and then you could mention it.

  4. Since it was legitimate be honest. List your ending position date. Most likely they will ask you why there was a gap. Tell the interviewers ‘there was a sharp drop in business after a new policy and as a result my position was eliminated). This shows it wasn’t due to you doing anything wrong. It’s business, they understand.

I wouldn’t bring it up, however, unless asked. That is, unless you can use it to show how you are dedicated to a company or if it taught you something valuable.
