  3. Formatting is the act of creating a file system on a volume, so that the operating system can store and retrieve data on that volume. When a drive is formatted, all data is ‘erased’. Make sure that is what you want to do before you perform a disk format.

    The quick and easy answer is: YES
    If there is only one drive in the computer, it can not erase itself and therefore reformat. You can only format or erase secondary (slave) drives.
