Yes, it's a good idea.

You don't want to put all of your eggs into one basket. If your company gets into trouble. Then you may loose your job and loose on your stock investment too at the same time. Because the stock price usually goes down, when the company gets into trouble.

Only if you are a high level manager of a company such as a CEO, President, Chief Financial Officer, or a Director. Then it makes sense to invest long term in the company you are working for. Because in such a position you will know how well the company is doing, and you will have a lot of influence on the company's profitability.

Logically, it makes more sense to sell stock you buy in an Employee Stock Purchase Program as soon as you can without penalty, especially if you get a discount when you buy it...unless it is the next Microsoft, eBay or Google!

Would you go out and buy stock in that company if you did not work for them? If not, why would you want that stock to be more than a small part of your overall portfolio?

Er- I got an Idea.

I get 15% off my companies stock and I dont have to pay broker fees. Why can't I just buy..lets say..........1000 shares of it with my employee discount then immediately sell it?

Sure why not, stock are investments. If you wanna take your money out, nothings stopping you.
