Is there a limit on the number of stocks you can purchase at a given time?

Kr asked:

I want to purchase stocks (AIG in particular) for the first time and wanted to know how many are for sale for a particular company and how many I can purchase.

  1. You can buy all you can afford. The only limitation would be if you wanted to buy more shares than all the would-be sellers are offering for sale which would be several million dollars worth.

AIG is going to go broke, so you will be throwing away your money

  2. There are a whole bunch of potential sellers of AIG that will be willing to sell almost all you wish to buy. Volume regularly is above 100 million shares a day, sometimes over 200 million. You need to realize that the company is virtually worthless. It might be possible to execute a short squeeze. There are almost 100 million shares short.

  3. no, as long as there is a seller, you can buy the stocks.
