Is there any volunteer work I can do involving trains for college?

Bob R asked:

I′m a real train buff in high school. I was wondering if I could do work involving Amtrak or NJ Transit trains.

You should inquire about this with the NJ transit. However, I believe Amtrak does offer some type of internship for college students. Now, if it involves something to do with maintaining the train that I don’t know, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

  2. My advice would be for you to enquire about volunteering at the local railroad museums in you area. It not might be much of an answer, but I hope I’ve given you a good start. I’ve given you a star for your question.

I’m with Mike M. on this one. Heritage Railways and Museums are always looking for volunteers and will be happy to accept you. There are many jobs to be done running any railway, from maintaining and cleaning locos and stock to issuing and collecting tickets, guard, signalling, and of course working on the footplate for which you can get training.

  4. I’m not sure about other companies, but BNSF offers internship programs for college students. If you are going into a transportation degree, you could look into their program. You apply for the internship just like you would apply for a job. On their website.
