Was there ever a time you could smoke on the platform or in the NYC subway trains?

Alexis G asked:

My friend says cigarette smoking was allowed in the New York subway system until 1975. Does anyone remember if this is true

I remember smoking on the platform in the mid-80s waiting for the downtown train. The LIRR rid its smoking cars in 1988. I think the NYC subway platforms were around the same time.
