What is the best version of PlayStation 3 to purchase?

Bruce A. B asked:

My son has PlayStation 2 and wants to upgrade to PS3 for X-mas. Which of theses versions is best to consider, the 40BG, 60GB or 80GB? Is one version more compatable than the other with PS2 games?

  1. The 40 gb cannot and will not play PS2 games, so you may want to skip the 40 gb version.

The 60 gb has the emotion engine, which was the cpu used to run PS2 games, so the 60 gb version can play almost all PS2 games. There are still some PS2 games that doesn’t work correctly on the 60 gb version, but Sony is giving updates to fix that problem.

The 80 gb uses software emulation for backward compatibility, and from what we’ve learned from the 360’s software emulation backward compatibility, it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. There are more PS2 games that won’t work on the 80 gb than there are on the 60 gb version.

The 60 gb is the best version overall if backward compatibility is a must. The 80 gb is the best bang for the buck because you pay 500 bucks, but you get an extra 20 gb of storage space and the game Motorstorm. The 40 gb is the best for those on a budget.

  2. The 60GB is my favorite, this is because it can play any PS2 game through direct hardware emulation. Though they aren’t being made anymore.

The 80GB is second best, because it can run most PS2 games through software emulation.

The 40GB, has no PS2 playback, so I wouldn’t get this version unless you don’t have enough money.

  3. walmart stating at $399 i think

  4. Well the 60GB PS3s are the ones that might have the EE+GSX Chip which makes it compatible with basicly 99% of PS2 games. The 80GB PS3 uses software emulation so it would only be compatible with around 25-50% of PS2 games, and then mainly the newer ones.
The 40GB PS3 has a few less features (less usb ports, I hear no wireless etc…) and it has absolutely no compatibility with PS2 games, but it’s the cheapest PS3.

  5. i think the 60 Gb is fine. I have it and it works great, i have so much memory, and never need to delete anything like i did with the ps2. Not the 40gb, because i heard it doesent play ps2 games, and if your son has the ps2, then he must have alot of ps2 games, so that would suck. And also no need for the 80gb, i think its just a waste of money. Too much memory! But yes the 60gb is perfect for your son, enjoy! And if he likes playing online, or if anybody eles is reading this my online name is agentjon. Enjoy

  6. 60GB for all the time.
