Whats with black people impersonated in video games?

christondyer1 asked:

This may be a stupid issue, but I get tired of seeing a specific black person either being stupid, or saying yo yo killing people , or robing banks-like GTA, Jeffrey form virtua fighters 5, and just more. What you guys think? Hope I get a lot responses. I plan to change all this when I become a video game programmer.

  1. It’s just a stereotype. And thats all videogames do is stereotype.

  2. just like all the asian old man are kung fu masters with long white beards

  3. I believe they go on the audience targeted for that specific game…they know a lot of teens will play GTA, and not every single teen has heard a black person speak articulately and proper. Mainly every young person that will play GTA speaks in slang (including “yo yo” lol), and the game will make people familiar to them, give them a sense of “Yeah, I know someone like that”. There’s no way a game like GTA4 will have a proper person unless that’s the way the character is supposed to be. It’s a “streets” type of game, so they need to be “streetwise” and talk like they are from “the streets”. Know what I mean? I’ve never pkayed VF, so I can’t comment on that one. =/

  4. Yeah, I agree with you. Nintendo and other video game companies are pretty racist and stereotypical. Ever notice that there really isn’t a huge dark-skinned Nintendo character?.. Huge as in, like, really well-known. I’m hoping that changes soon. Video game companies really need to learn that the world isn’t only full of white people, but every colored person.

  5. Based on other media this sterotype seems to fit the majority of african american people. Note, i do not agree with this sterotype but it is used in games, movies, music, and can some times be seen in the streets.
The hood lingo and actions seem to be bought in mass by more non african americans, mostly caucasian. This can be seen mostly in Rap music and clothing lines, whos biggest buyers are young pre-teen to teen caucasians.
Sadly alot of African american comics, music artists, and sports players only seem to urge this sterotype on. For a race of people to once of been slaves and worked to finally achieve equality (or least close to it, people will debate complete equality) and have all the negro college funds , schooling, and countless other programs to assist them, Very few take advantage of this, In fact Bill Cosby has done many public speakings on this matter and how they themselves are spurring on this sterotyping.
in fact if your really interrested –>
I dont see myself as a prejudice person, but at times i will admit its hard to ignore the sterotypes when you do see these sterotype actions in use and done every day.
I hope you can change it when you get older, there are so many other things to fight about then race.
    good question and point.

  6. there are some notable black char’s out there who aren’t part of the stereotype.there’s Dudley and Sean from SF3 for ya from back in ‘98. and they’ve both got sizable followings. Try checking out other games too. I’m sure you’ll stumble on new black characters that aren’t the typical ones.
