he is going to play for the mariners
Texas rangers, he’s a friend of Ron Washington, will get to pad his stats at their ballpark and tom hicks likes to over pay has-beens
The Yankees
My first guess would be the Angels. It’s still in California, it is an AL team, they have the money, they could use his bat, and they don’t currently have a real strong DH. The A’s would be a possibility - his combination of On Base Percentage and power is what GM Billy Beane covets, but I don’t think they could afford to spend that kind of money. The Rangers could be a possibility, but I think that they are trying to cut down on high priced sluggers since they just traded their best player, Mark Teixiera. The Mariners would be a possibilty, but only if they were able to unload the contract of richie Sexson. They would love to add Bonds’ bat, as they have struggled to hit for power ever since A-Rod left town, and Bonds has said before that he really likes the city and the ballpark.
I would be surprised if either the Yankees or any National League team would get Bonds. At this point in his career, he is unable to play everyday in the outfield, and for the amount of money you would be paying him, you do not want a part-time player like he currently is for SF. The Yankees already have two players they would like to be in the DH role in Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon. If they were to sit Bonds, they would be commiting to playing Giambi at 1B, where he is a liability, Johnny Damon in CF, where he is also a liability, and letting Melky Cabrera, who is a great young talent, rot on the bench. If A-Rod leaves and Melky is pulled out pof the starting line-up, that leaves Jeter as the only accomplished defensive starter (and many believe that he is horribly overrated defensively).
As for the Red Sox, I would say maybe. If they opt to not resign Mike Lowell, they could move Youkilis back to 3b, play Ortiz at 1b, and Bonds at DH. But I don’t think this will happen. The Red Sox have seemed very committed in the past to playing Ortiz at DH, even allowing Manny to continue to play in the field, where he has proven that he may very well be the worst defensive outfielder in all of baseball.
I would doubt the Tigers would sign him, being that he has a longtime feud with assistant coach Andy Van Slyke, and that they already have a very good DH in Gary Sheffield, and three good Of’s in Ordonez, Granderson, and Thames.
Yankees always get the cream of the crop . He’ll love that short rigt field next year…
A’s or Rangers…
