Why do Baseball players have to spit every 30 seconds?

Roger asked:

Is it a cultural thing that makes baseball players and coaches spit every 30 seconds? Or is it something they drank that makes them spit? Or just contempt for the opposition?

I like watching the world series, but hate watching them spitting nonstop.

    Cuz it’s better than swallowing.

  5. tobacco and sunflower seeds, it is gross though

  6. Todd Helton is the worst for that. Everytime they panned to him he spit, it was uncanny. Funny, but strange…how many times could he possible be spitting when the camera isn’t on?

  7. I posed the same question a few months ago. It’s tobacco. It is not an act of contempt to the opposition. They just do ot and I don’t know how it got started. Read the source below. It may be of interest to you.

  8. Its spit tobacco.

    Hence the name SPIT tobacco.

If you’re going to watch baseball, you better get used to the spitting. Players have been doing it for years–I doubt its going to stop anytime soon.

  9. Ever played a sport and got a bad taste in your mouth? I don’t understand how watching them spit can bother anyone that much.

  10. If they do it every 29 seconds, they get penalized, hence the 30 second rule.

my $0.02… it’s an obsessive compulsive disorder. yes, a repetitive body disorder akin to finger nail biting, hair/skin picking, etc. amongst the baseball culture, and many male-dominated sports it is quite accepted and even becomes contagious
