Would the Red Sox benefit by picking up Barry Bonds?

Jay S asked:

Now that DH David Ortiz is on the 15 day DL and looking at possibly more time than that with rehab. Would the Red Sox benefit with the likes of Barry Bonds in the DH role or would it tarnish the Red Sox reputation?

No he will be a cancer on the ballclub, plus the media will be all over him.

  2. Boston doesn’t want the distraction. They are defending champs, and while Bonds could add some power, he will create more unwanted attention, and boy would Yanks fans jump all over that.
Also, they don’t need him period. Sure the loss of Ortiz is bad, but they have plenty of talent that they don’t need the likes of Bonds to continue winning games, and be an effective force in the AL.

  3. I think they could benifit, its not like hes a bad player.
As for repuation wise, it couldent hurt, right?

  4. There was a line in Star Trek: The Next Generation that you can’t tarnish a rusty blade.

I actually just wanted to use that line.

There would have to be some guidelines.
“You are not a $15 mill player anymore, get used to it”
“You are to fill a need and if you do well, and we use you as we need you after Ortiz comes back then you may get a world series ring”

The trouble is that I don’t think Bonds will react positively to people treating him as anything less than a primadonna.

  5. I don’t think that Theo Epstein would stoop that low to go after Bonds.Better off without him.Theo has much more class
    than that.

  6. No, the Red Sox are good enough without Bonds. Bonds would only bring with him unwanted baggage. It would be a disruptive force that the Red Sox can’t afford to deal with. The AL East is already a dog fight and will remain as such throughout the season. No one needs Bonds to screw that up for any team.

  7. I think Bonds would fit in perfectly on the Red Sucks. What’s another overrated jerk on a team full of them?

  8. bonds would do more harm than good, he’d be a distraction, he has a bad attitude and he hasnt played ball for a little bit so he would probably require some time in the minors. bottom line is its not worth it

  9. No. They dont need all the baggage that comes with him.

  10. Red Sox don’t need him Ortiz will be gone for a little while and they have such a good line up they don’t need any one to make a distration they need to focus on who on they’re team will be the DH and set it straight Barry Bonds would help and make things worse at the same time.

  11. He would be nothing but a distraction for the Red Sox. They would regret ever signing him. Let Barry stay retired where he belongs.

  12. The Red Sox season’s been wounded by the Ortiz injury, signing Bonds would make it a fatal wound.

First off, signing Bonds wouldn’t be cheap. Think about the kind of money Clemens got for playing part of last season…I could see the Sox paying Bonds $10 million just for him to play 3 1/2 months of the season. Second, Bonds wouldn’t be able to step into the role right away. He hasn’t played since September, so he’d have to spend a few weeks in the minors, meaning that it’s possible Ortiz could be back before Bonds is even ready to go. Third, Bonds is a clubhouse cancer and team chemistry is a big part of why Boston is as good as they are.

If the Sox sign Bonds, I guarantee he’ll be a bust.

This is just my opinion, but No i dont think so. Why? because the red sox have the players to cover ortiz and to get offered bonds they have to go through triple a first before looking to him.

And i also think it would tarnish the sox reputation, they have a pretty good one and to get bonds he could ruin it. Idk just speakin out.

  14. No way the BoSox shouldn’t pick up Barry Bonds. David Ortiz is only going to be out for at least a month. I don’t think Barry Bonds is the right guy for this. The Sox are a first place team…they don’t need that type of distraction.

If the Red Sox were in the need for unnecessary media attention they would benefit. The Red Sox have just won another World Series, Barry Bonds has never been on a World Series winning team, so adding him to the roster would probably not have a positive impact.

    ABSOLUTELY NOT

im a die hard sox fan and i think the the sox could put casey of coco the fill the void of ortiz. of course it wouldn’t be as good, but casey did really good when lowell was on the DL in April.

plus all the media and the other crap about having bonds on ur team

I guess the fake fans and bandwagoners are jealous that Barry is the HR leader for career and season while wearing a SF Giants jersey, but at the same time not looking at the big picture because they don’t know anything about baseball.

Who would not be smart enough to pick Barry Bonds up for just the 1/2 season stretch run? Imagine the publicity (not negative) for having a MLB record holder playing for you, all the positive cash flow when filling the seats so that a young bonafide star can be picked up during the postseason, the Red Sox fan(s) that can cash in if they catch one of Barry’s final HR hits and also just tolerating him for such a short time?

It may be a media circus, but the team and the fans can definitely get rich, especially if this would be his last partial season played….. True baseball fans would agree that he’s getting hurt physically and emotionally due to the steroid allegations, but the fans are not the ones hurting because they are still watching the game of baseball and filling up stadiums across the US…..

I heard they tried but they couldn’t find room for his nice black leather reclining chair in the already crowded Red Sox clubhouse. (sarcasm)

  19. I don’t see that happening at all.

  20. Only at a realistic price and I doubt that will ever happen. He’d be a distraction to their club house and not worth the expensive gamble.

  21. Chili McFreeze on May 14th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Yes. He’s one of the greatest hitters of all time and hit 28 homers last year with an on base almost .500. Plus they have a veteran team that won’t be affected by any possible distractions that could come with him. And they’d only have to give up cash, which they have plenty of, and nothing off of their roster.

  22. Boston should pick up Bonds. Especially since the word “surgery” is being thrown around in regards to Ortiz.

Yes he may be a polarizing figure, but the dude can still hit and produce .280/15hr/60rbi. There’s no way in hell that any team, including the Red Sox, will pay anything near what Clemens got for pitching half a season. The jig is up, both Bonds and Clemens are disgraced…they have no leverage for money. Especially Bonds, because it’s not like other teams are clamoring for him. He will sign for the minimum or incentive-laden contract and play for one reason: a ring.

What better place than the AL? What better place than Boston in the AL?

If he acts up and causes problems, you release him…simple as that. In the end you get a chance to get good production for cents on the dollar…if he doesn’t, then what do you lose? Cents on the dollar.

Only problem is that Bonds hates Boston and the feeling is mutual so there is a slim to none chance it goes down…even if it should.
